Separation of Power is a response to the stimulus package signed by Barack Obama. Although many Americans are cautiously optimistic, we are uncertain of our future. Unfortunately, there are many powerful entities that potentially stand in the way of a new vision for the arts.
Separation of Power captures the new direction and focus of a President who possesses an innovative and aggressive art platform, and contrasts it with the rigid and conservative ideas of years past. The video contrasts Barack Obama, expressing his core beliefs as an individual, with that of a group of nuns, praying collectively in unison. President Obama represents the individual, hope, and the idea of change; while the nuns represent the collective group adhering to and regurgitating religious doctrine, and the importance of holding on to the approaches and practices of yesterday. The video portrays the stark differences and the separation that exists among two of the most powerful forces in America today -- government and religion.
Separation of Power is a projection of an old 1960's television set abandoned on the street in front of a chain-link fence as if it was forgotten or left behind. The television set references the old views and the lack of importance that was placed on art and music in our society by the individuals and groups who have collectively held the authority in years past. The video plays on the television set and illustrates the difference in political philosophies--the individual interest versus that of the group. An old 1960s crate (referencing the old soapbox orators) is placed on the floor beside the projection of the television -- encouraging individuals to step up on their soapbox and express their individual views.
